Šipan is the largest island in the Elafiti archipelago, often called “Dubrovnik’s islands,” located just 8.3 nautical miles (about 12.5 km) from Dubrovnik. Despite its proximity to the city, it feels wonderfully peaceful, with only around 410 permanent inhabitants. The island’s name first appeared in historical records in the 1370s under variations such as Jupana, Zupana, or Supana. During the 15th and 16th centuries, wealthy Ragusa (Dubrovnik) families built their elegant summer residences here, many of which remain as atmospheric ruins. Across Šipan, you’ll also find numerous small churches and medieval remains that tell the story of its rich past. Šipan even holds a place in the Guinness World Records thanks to its remarkable density of olive trees per square meter. The olive oil produced here is renowned for its unique taste and, according to local tradition, even has healing qualities. The island has two main villages: Suđurađ, on the southeastern tip, and Šipanska Luka, on the western side—home to Studio Apartments & Rooms Lela. Together, they offer a glimpse of authentic island life surrounded by history, nature, and timeless charm.
Šipan is the ideal island for discovering hidden gems, whether along the coast or inland. Explore scenic landscapes, quiet villages, and historic sites up close by bicycle. For something different, take a kayak or a boat to reach the most secluded spots — hidden bays and beautiful beaches where you can swim in the crystal-clear sea. If you love walking and nature, you’ll find plenty of trails: stroll along the coast or hike up to the island’s highest peak for breathtaking views of the bay. Prefer relaxing by the sea? Choose one of the many small, hidden swimming spots, or head to the main beach to unwind in the shade of bamboo with your favorite drink. Food and leisure are also part of the experience. In Šipanska Luka, where we’re located, you’ll find two bars, a snack bar, five restaurants, and a beach bar. In Suđurađ village, just 5 km away, there’s another bar, three more restaurants, and a hotel with a pool and restaurant open to everyone. Šipan is the perfect destination if you’re looking for unspoiled nature, clear sea, and a truly relaxing holiday. Here, time slows down — and life feels wonderfully simple.
