Šipan is the biggest island in the Elafiti archipelago group, also known as ‘Dubrovnik’s islands‘, situated just 8.3 nautical miles (about 12.5 kilometres) from Dubrovnik. Šipan has only around 410 permanent inhabitants. The island’s name was first mentioned in historical documents in the 1370s as Jupana, Zupana or Supana. During the 15th and 16th century, the wealthy Ragusa (Dubrovnik) families built their summer residence on the island and the remains of them are still there. On Šipan there is a big number of small churches and numerous remains of churches from medieval times. The interesting story is that Šipan has been entered in the book of Guinness World Records thanks to the large number of olive trees per square metre. The taste of olive oil that is made on Šipan island is really special and it is even considered by some people to have healing power. On Šipan there are two main villages, Suđurađ on the southeastern tip of the island, and Šipanska Luka, on the western side, where Studio Apartments & Rooms Lela are situated.
Šipan is ideal for exploring hidden gems, along the coast or inland. Bicycle sightseeing offers close exploration of landscapes, villages and historic sites. On the other hand, only a kayak or a boat will enable you to swim in the most secluded and most beautiful spots like hidden bays and beaches. It’s easy and fun! Love walking and nature? Excellent! On Šipan, you can go on long walks by the sea or to the highest peak and take a lovely picture of the bay. Love resting and swimming? On Šipan you can find many small and hidden spots to swim or just go to the main beach and chill in the shadow of bamboo while drinking your favourite beverage. Love eating and going out? In Šipanska Luka (where are we situated), you can find 3 bars, 4 restaurants and a beach bar. In Suđurađ village (5 km drive) there is one more bar, 3 restaurants and a hotel with a swimming pool and a restaurant that everyone can visit. Finally, Šipan island is the perfect destination for you if you seek unexplored nature, clear sea and relaxing holiday. And be sure, on Šipan time stops!
